my very smart dog

reading outside
in the early morning
I put the book down
I turned to my friend
my dog
I asked him, “what are we doing, man?”
he tilted his head, began to pant
I asked, “what’s the meaning of life, bud?”
he looked at me only for a second
then jumped off the patio couch and chased a lizard into the bushes.
that’s it. that’s the meaning of life;
the chase.
that’s all there is;
the chase.
running full speed ahead
into whatever danger there is
just to see if you can do it.
the chase.
never being satisfied with anything
always chasing the next book
when you catch it
the bliss is only there for a split
then off to another chase.

I have a very smart dog.
